ASPHYXIA AT BIRTH Windle (1969) summarized results of experiments on asphyxia at birth in monkeys. ... But newborn monkeys subjected to periods of total asphyxia for several minutes did not develop cerebral palsy, nor was the pathology characteristic of cerebral palsy found in the brain. ... Windle recognized that asphyxia had not produced cerebral palsy and suggested that brief period of asphyxia at birth might be responsible for what was then referred to as minimal brain dysfunction (or learning disabilities). ... A period of brief total asphyxia at birth would rarely occur apart from a longer period of partial hypoxia. The autism spectrum might result from the spectrum of partial hypoxia with motor involvement to total asphyxia with auditory impairment associated with difficult labor and delivery.
