Frederick Douglass: The Self-Made Man Frederick Douglass is the definition of an accomplished man of many achievements. Frederick Douglass was born a slave in Talbot County, Maryland. He grew up on a plantation of harsh conditions. Until recently, Frederick Douglass had no knowledge of his age. His childhood was one of isolation. He was sheltered from violence at his early age. The first instance of violence he witnessed was the beating of his Aunt Hester. This was his first experience to what slavery was like. He went to live and work for the Hugh Auld family in Baltimore when he was 7 or 8 years old. Sophia Auld is the benevolent mistress in Baltimore who begins to teach him his alphabet. Her husband then convinces her that she will spoil a good slave by teaching him how to read so Frederick Douglass has to learn to read on his own.
