James Joyce’s ‘Eveline’: Living Death
In James Joyce’s short novella “Eveline,” we meet a sweet yet confused young Irish woman. Eveline is the porter of her siblings, who has been subjected into taking care of their abusive father and their household as her mother’s dying wish. Eveline lives a dark, depressing life with no hope of a chance of it getting any better until she meets a young sailor named Frank. Eveline is the faced with a tough choice that makes her really look at the harsh reality of her life, she is faced with the ultimate choice; to stay or to go. In the end Eveline chooses to stay at home and settle back into the abusive and dull lifestyle of serving her father, dusting her empty home and working dead end jobs just to make ends meet. ...
Why does Eveline feel so inclined to keep her promise to her mother that she would “keep the home together as long as she could”? ... So why does Eveline want to hold a promise to a woman who has never done anything for her? ... ” – ‘the end of pleasure is pain’ and the thought of ‘that life of commonplace sacrifices closing in final craziness’ (6) scared Eveline into believing that there is no hope.
