Images…
Images are placed on people, by people. These images usually hold no real or true statement, and if so these truths are exaggerated and placed in completely different categories. ... For instance, Hutchinson revealed some of the more common images placed on Black males by the media. ... All of these images have created many different ideas of what black males are, and what they stand for. The people who have bought into these images have created much more of a stir, and keep the cycle perpetuating. ... The news reporters who run these images are usually hired on the basis that they will be objective bystanders and only report the truth… But the truth does not always sell, and after figuring out that people want to hear the bad things that black criminals have done, and do not want to hear about white crimes, this is what is sent to press…stuff that sells. ...
The film Ethnic Notions also unveiled numerous images that have been placed not just on the Black males, but the entire population of Black Americans. ... These images depicted the men usually as rather large men, with big lips, and with a constant giggle. ... These people saw this as humorous and all the time were unaware of how distorted and unrealistic these actors and images really were. ... The business world has continued to use some of the images and have made a large profit off of these inaccurate representations.
Everywhere people go, someone can say that they see yet another image of prejudice actions, but if we spend all of our time out looking for these images, some of the more positive ideas and statements will be overlooked. I do believe that things need to change, but like in the movie Get On the Bus it shows that people need to change…and until that happens these images will never come to a close. ... I personally do not feel that this movie portrayed negative images of black males, I think that the movie let the audience in on the ideas and lifestyles of black men.
