Crucible Essay

Choose one scene from the play in which 2/3 key characters Are involved and in which their personalities and key themes Of the play are revealed. How would you stage the scene For maximum dramatic effect? The scene I have chosen is the scene where John Proctor confesses to committing lechery with Abigail, when he calls Abigail a whore and in doing so tries to discredit her in front of the court and mainly in front of Danforth. The only problem Proctor has is that he needs proof. This is where the next part of the scene comes in when Elizabeth, Proctor’s wife, is summoned to the court to give evidence of her husband being a lecher. The only problem is she doesn’t know her husband has confessed and so would not willingly discredit him, however Proctor had previously described her as an honest woman. So will she lie or tell the truth. I have chosen this scene because I believe it is one of the most dramatic and important parts of the play. It also shows a lot about the different characters and their personalities. The scene commences with Abigail calling to God to get Mary Warren’s spirit off her, as soon as Abigail does this Proctor, knowing she is lying, dives at her grabbing her and roaring with rage says “How do you call Heaven! Whore! Whore!” and after more confusion he admits to Danforth “I have known her sir, I have known her”. This particular part of the scene shows a lot about Proctor, firstly it shows us that he is a very erratic person as he tends to follow his heart more than his head. I think you could also say this makes him a noble person.
