The statement that the constitution of the United States of America is a bundle of compromises is in fact very accurate. ... The delegates quickly decided to do away with the Articles and construct a new constitution. ... In order to secure the advancement of the convention and ensure ratification of the Constitution, the delegates had to compromise a number of times, dealing with issues of sovereignty, a bicameral legislature, slavery, and the presidency.
One of the compromises dealt with was that of the issue of sovereignty. ... Nevertheless, the key to the Constitution was the “distribution of political authority, [which] is separation [the] powers” (Norton, 189). ... The final document nonetheless showed indications of Madison’s original plan; however compromises created a system of government less powerful at the national level than what he foresaw (Norton, 189).
