Beethoven's Piano Sonata, Op. 22

In Beethoven’s Piano Sonata, Op. 22, Beethoven uses a very uncommon key relationship structure between the two main sections of his piece. Instead of using the typical parallel key relationship, he chooses to use the less common, relative key relationship. Even more uncommon, Beethoven chooses, on a larger level, to progress from the major key to the relative minor key, as opposed to the more common practice of moving from the minor key to the relative major key. The movement that Beethoven uses in the piece seems to play with the idea of being the opposite of the normal progression that was usually followed during his time. In the Menueto section of this piece, Beethoven progresses from the main major key of Bb major to its relative g minor.
