Vickie Van Uitert English 12 Per. 4 The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Mrs. Anderson 3/26/04 The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is a 143 paged science fiction novel about a life-after-Earth scenario. One of the main characters, Arthur Dent, was an Earthling who was lucky enough to escape the destruction of his planet. He was saved by his friend Ford Prefect which came from a planet called Betelgeuse. Ford was also an author of the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy. He was captive on Earth for fifteen years and now he finally was able to get off of the planet. They got on board of a Vogon ship which evidently they were kicked off of into space. Luckily for them they were picked up by another ship, called the Heart of Gold, which were occupied by Zaphod, president of the Imperial Galactic Government and his girlfriend, Trillian. From that point forward, it is about the adventures these four have. Adams’ style of writing is not would be considered “typical” for the average science fiction novel. Yes there is robots, space ships, and aliens yet there is no complexity or seriousness to it.
