The term Artificial Intelligence is a term that was used in 1956 by John McCarthy (the inventor of LISP, a powerful language used in simulating AI) at a conference held at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. From this conference, many laboratories were set up for the sole purpose of working to develop and study Artificial Intelligence. An example of one of the laboratories set up to deal with this "new" concept was the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, which was set up in 1959. This is their introductory statement in relation to their studies in AI: "The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory has been an active entity at MIT in one form or another since at least 1959. Our goal is to understand the nature of intelligence and to engineer systems that exhibit intelligence. ... We believe that vision, robotics, and language are the keys to understanding intelligence, and as such our laboratory is much more heavily biased in these directions than many other Artificial Intelligence laboratories." The goal of this laboratory is to ultimately create machines that are intelligent, that "exhibit intelligence". ... They see humans as the weaker species - one with no intelligence/perception.
