Ai) what is meant by the word ‘abortion’?

There are many opinions and actual facts about abortion in today’s society but which is correct? Well opinions and facts are very different thus a few of them are the actual meanings of abortion.

Abortion comes from Latin the Latin word aboriri - meaning to miscarry. ...
An abortion is when a foetus is expelled from its mother’s uterus before the pregnancy reaches ‘full terms’ (usually 40 weeks). Sometimes this can happen through no human fault, it is called a spontaneous abortion and then it can happen through human fault; doctors and the parents this is called a procured abortion.
(Christian Perspectives pg 36)
This is a scientific explanation of an abortion. It tells people what actually happens inside the woman’s body, however this is only ½ of an actual abortion. The second ½ of abortion is the morals. Every human has a conscience, and automatically when a woman considers abortion she will feel some form of guilt. ...

An abortion is not always caused through the fault of the parents or doctors, it can happen due to no human fault.
There are three terms for this type of abortion but the all describe the unfortunate happenings that can occur during a woman’s pregnancy:

A spontaneous abortion- it means it happens without warning
A natural abortion – it means it’s through no human fault
A ‘miscarriage’ - a miscarriage is the more technical term, it means a woman loses her baby only a while into conception.

Both types of abortions, a ‘procured abortion’ and a ‘miscarriage’ can lead to health defects in a woman. ...
Here is an example of what could happen to a woman after losing a baby through a miscarriage or a procured abortion i. ...

Aii) what biblical and church teachings might be used in a discussion about abortion?

Biblical

The bible does not use the actual word ‘abortion’ or even deal with it because abortions were not an issue during the time the bible was written.
However many Christians today have different views on abortion and they will use the bible as a reference whilst discussing the facts and their opinions. Some Christians will use it to support abortion and others will use it to show that abortion is humanly wrong.
Today the abortion debate has reached a similar point; in the media, as well as in countless churches, people are being told that the Bible condemns abortion. ... Christians that disagree with abortion and are using the bible to support their views will use the following references from the bible:
Genesis 1:26-27 ‘The sanctity of human life’
Exodus 20: 13 ‘ The 10 commandments’
Some people will ask what the 10 commandments has to do with abortion but those that argue against abortion will stress that only one commandment in particular has a lot to do with the bible and abortion that commandment is the 6th Commandment. ... The bible teaches us that life starts from the moment of conception; Thus if a woman were to have an abortion she would be killing her child, God’s child and the father’s child consequently she is automatically breaking the 6th commandment.

For those that will use the bible and its teachings to justify that abortion is right will take in to consideration the word Nephesh. ...
In the final analysis, the Bible is silent on the subject of abortion. ... "
Although the bible does not indirectly talk about abortion it does talk about if a woman was to miscarry (an abortion through no fault of her own) and what the Law should do about it. ...
Churches will use this scripture to preach to women, girls, men and boys that abortion is wrong because if the child is created by God himself and created in the Image of God then if we abort it we are pushing God out of our bodies.

In the bible there is nothing indirectly about abortion itself because as said before abortion was not an issue during the times of writing the bible.
It is only in this lifetime that abortion is a regular occurrence; women can go for a fourth and a fifth abortion and think nothing of it.
Today women have abortion for many reasons:
If they have disabilities
Their age
It was not planned
Careers
Families
Personal fears of bringing up a child
If they were raped
If they are a drug addict or have a disease
If they were raped and had a disabilities

During the time the bible was written the above sentences were quite trivial below there are explanations to why these sentences were trivial:

Females were often married off very young, from 12 yrs and upwards. ...

If a girl of that time did fall pregnant, she would have no option but to stay at home and look after it, abortion did not even enter her mind. ...
All churches have an opinion about abortion and just like Christians or even non-Christians of past and present their opinions differ. ... Traditional Christian teaching places the highest value on human life, and therefore condemns abortion.
One of the earliest Christian writings outside the New Testament –
The Didache says, “ You should not kill through abortion the fruit of the womb and you shall not murder the infant already born”

The Second Vatican council declared that ‘life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes’
(Vatican II Gaudium et spes 51)

In spite of these early churches laying down the foundation of their beliefs the early church fathers used to pass allowance to a woman having an abortion as long as it was only up to 40 days after the conception of the child.
