Rough Draft 1. When we are confronted with suffering in the world around us, we have two basic choices: we can do something about the situation, or we can do nothing. People choose one option or the other for many different reasons. People act or fail to act because of four main reasons: hoplessness, individualism, enlightened self-interest, and compassion. · Hopelessness - o there is too much suffering in the world, overwhelming o “I am just one person, what difference can I make.” o “The problems in my community are beyond my control…” o Lack of hope · Individualism – o Each person responsible for his or her own actions. o “It is there fault, why should I help them” o “She gets what she deserves, it was her decision.” o Me-first attitude · Enlightened self-interest o Helping others will ultimately help oneself. o “the government should spend money educating people about how to avoid health problems because it costs less to prevent the problems than to treat them later.” o Beneficial in the long run.
