Structural and Socio Linguistic Aspects of School Slang in Modern English
INTRODUCTION The English language can be realized in different social varieties, and one of important subsystems of modern English is slang. ... It has been pointed in linguistic literature that school slang exists as a specific variety of the English language [4]. But the problems of school slang have not been paid much attention to in linguistic studies. The urgency of our investigation is conditioned by the necessity to study different colloquial varieties of English, mainly the peculiarities of school jargon. The objective of the given paper lies in the description of peculiarities of slang and jargon in British schools. The objective of the investigation determines the following tasks: - to compile the list of words that are used as school slangisms and jargonisms with reference to the conditions of their emergence; - to trace the origin of school slangisms and jargonisms; - to analyse the ways and means of their formation; - to deternine the most productive ways and means of word-formation that are characteristic of school slang and jargon; - to describe the socio-linguistic stratification of school slang and jargon.
