Role of Women in Greek Society
Historical records show that the role of women within ancient Greek society was lowly and insignificant. Yet in Greek plays and tragedies, women were often used as major characters. Ancient dramas gave us insights on how women were treated and thought of in society. Although their role in documented political reality seemed to be weak and fragile, theatre revealed a whole new rebellious emotional aspect to women’s role in ancient society. The play Antigone could be used as one of the many examples of how women made their presence known within society. By examining the role of women in theater we can see certain aspects of how ancient Greeks viewed the role of women in society and the contrast between what role women actually played (politically, socially, and religiously). During Sophocles time, women like Antigone were extremely brave with there actions.
