What are those characteristics of Islam which have won millions of followers to the faith, and which make it so appealing to the modern age?
Islam brings man out of darkness and initiates him into knowledge and light. ... Before Islam, Arabia was a land where people bowed to statues in worship; it was a land where female infants were buried alive; a land where rape and adultery were common; a land were each tribe waged war on its neighboring tribe. Yet after the revelation of Islam, and by the end of Muhammads life, the entire Arabian peninsula changed from paganism and idolatry to the worship of One God; from civil quarrels to national union; from drunkenness and debauchery to sobriety and piety; from chaos and anarchy to discipline and justice; from utter moral bankruptcy to the highest standards of moral Excellence. ...
Now getting back to the characteristics of Islam that led to its success. ...
A unique feature of Islam is that it is a perfect balance between the material and the spiritual. Islam does not stand for life-denial; it stands for life-fulfillment. Islam teaches that moral and material powers must be welded together: material resources can be used for the good of man and for the service of justice. ... And so Islam aims at establishing an equilibrium between the material and the spiritual. ... Islam enjoins man to purify his soul, while also taking care of his daily life. ...
Islam is a practical religion. ... Thus Islam is clear, rational, and practical. Islam is a complete way of life, catering for all the fields of human existence. ...
C) Balance between Individuality & Collectivity
Another unique feature of Islam is that it establishes a balance between individualism and collectivism. Islam believes in the individual personality of man, and holds each individual personally accountable for his/her actions: "Man shall have what he strives for" (Quran 53:59)
"For each is that which he has earned and against each is only which he has deserved. ...
The message of Islam is for the entire human race. ... " (Quran 25:1) In Islam, all mankind is Equal, regardless of race, color, language, or nationality.
