As the night wore on Barbara’s thoughts drift from the banquet to her soon to be husband, Edmond Willows who she is planning to meet tonight and marry. ... It is now evident that he only came to see Barbara. He notices some guests leaving, and being surprised they have left this early enquires to lady Grebe about the matter.

The Grebes thoughts were later realised when a letter arrived from Barbara, in forming them that she was on her way to London, and before this letter reached home they would be married.      Uplandtowers then begins cursing Barbara for what she has done has disgraced his good friend Sir John Grebe and has destroyed his chance of marrying her and gaining an heir. ...
Sir John continued in his search for Barbara, driving toward the capital, only to realise there was no use for it. ...
Eventually Edmond and Barbara ran out of money, they sent a letter home, asking Sir John and Lady Grebe to forgive what they have done and will fall on their knees and be dutiful children for evermore. They were over taken by the raptures of love, and Barbara being a very irrational girl suggested they should escape and start a new life, but soon reality crept into the situation and they ran out of money.
Lady Grebe and Sir John have a strong relationship with their daughter and allowed her and Edmond to move back into the family. ...
Three or four days later a shabby post – chaise drew up at the door of Chene Manor – house. Although Barbara was now Mrs Willows wife of Edmond Willows of nowhere they were still glad to see their spoilt daughter return safe and sound. Barbara exploded with penitential tears, and greeted her Mother and Farther. They had a house ready for Barbara and Edmond to live in, it was small and out of the way. Edmond will be educated, “he was to apply himself to the study of languages, manners, history, society, ruins, and everything else that came under his eyes, till he should return to take his place without blushing by Barbara’s side”. ...
