Noise and Indoor Lighting Effects on Concentration

INTRODUCTION
Noise and indoor lighting may be a serious problem in workplace because in every day life individuals are exposed to various types of light and noise which may disrupt concentration. This research examines whether low indoor lighting and noise have any effect on concentration. Our personal reason to conduct this research is that we, as students, spend most of our time studying in different places where we are exposed to different levels of light and noise. It will be useful to understand whether the low lighting in our room or the bright lighting in class rooms, or the noise annoyance during an exam affects our concentration. It will also be beneficial to apply this to workplace, since a decrease in concentration will end up with a decrease in performance. The results of our research may contribute to the arrangement of lighting at workplace. Also, noise will be reduced to minimum if it has a big impact.
There was not enough previous research found in literature analyzing both noise and light, so a scientific contribution is made by examining the combination of noise and low indoor lighting on concentration and performance. Only Knez and Hygge (2002) concern about the effects of both indoor lighting and noise. ... It is also supported that the cool-white lighting weakens long-term memory recall, compared to warm-white lighting. The conclusions that can be drawn from these findings are a) learning from a novel text while at the same time coding a meaningful, irrelevant conversational speech may redirect cognitive necessities needed for comprehension b) the cool-white lighting may be more disturbing than warm-white lighting in problem solving and recall. Finally, no combined impact of noise and light was shown on self reported effect and cognitive performance.
Simon Banbury (1998) conducted research that examines the effect of background noise in open-plan office environment on memory for prose and mental arithmetic.
