Attending many schools in a child’s primary years can leave an everlasting effect in his or her style of learning. I had attended more than ten schools before I had finished junior high school. My early childhood education was acquired though many different sources and with many techniques. However, it had not been noticed until I was in the fourth grade that I had a reading deficit. None of the tests that had been administered previously had ever shown this. One reason for this may have been, changing schools in the middle of the school year. Depending on what state, district or city you lived in, the school may have been ahead of behind the previous school. Previous learning experiences were never verified by the present school. They relied upon word of mouth of the student or a parent. Once my deficit had been noticed, it was a battle to overcome, but it was stressed by my mother that only I could solve this problem though reading, reading, reading, and more reading. She further stressed that the more one reads, the easier it was to understand what it was that one was reading. High interest, low reading vocabulary books were first introduced to me. Being able to choose the books that were of interest to me kept me reading.
