Legends of the Fall does not include one single narrative. It includes three separate novellas by Jim Harrison. The theme throughout all three of these novellas stays primarily constant. These absorbing novellas explore the theme of revenge and the actions to which people resort when their lives or goals are threatened, adding up to an extraordinary vision of the twentieth-century man. In the first novella, which is called Revenge the protagonist is a man named Cochran. In the beginning of this storyline the main character is found on the side of the road, naked and almost dead, by a local man and his daughter. As the story progresses the readers find out how Cochran ended up like that and why he did. The second novella is called The Man Who gave up His Name, and it involves the character of Nordstrom. This novella starts out explaining how Nordstrom came to meet his wife and what their life was like together until their divorce.
