Isreal: An Overview

Isreal: An Overview The history of Israel extends for over thirty five centuries, although it has only been a free state for a few decades. “The modern state was established in 1948 as a homeland for the Jewish people, who had been living in exile for over two thousand years (Israelis, 318).” The population of Israel is currently around five million people. It doubled in the first four years of its existence, from 1948 to 1952, because Jews were now able to flock to their homeland where they would no longer be persecuted (319). Israel has borders with Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. “It is a small, narrow country,” that is around two hundred and eighty miles long and eighty five miles wide. Also, the lowest point on the earth is the Dead Sea, which is located in Israel. The Dead Sea reaches one thousand three hundred feet below sea level (319). Their dry season is from April to October, where the climate is constantly hot, rainless, and long. From November through March is their wet season. The weather is mild and colder in hilly areas (Israel, 935).
