... In the story, a frail old man with a set of wings is found and kept as a “pet” for several years. He is initially described as “dressed like a ragpicker”, with “only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth”. Most importantly, he had “huge buzzard wings, dirty and half plucked”. The tone of the story is very factual, which serves to amplify the cruelty that the angel experiences. ... Unfortunately, they dismissed the real miracle as a fraudulent old man. ... The angel is viewed as a threat and a problem--no one speaks of awe, reverence and love, or even suggests acting with simple kindness toward the mysterious man with wings
