Philosopher Kings
In Books five, six and seven of The Republic of Plato, by Allan Bloom, Socrates argues that the “philosophers must rule…” and the guardians must either become philosophers or the kings philosophers. ... One can conclude such a definition when he states, “But the one who is willing to taste every kind of learning with gusto, and who approaches learning with delight, and is insatiable, we shall justly assert to be a philosopher, won’t we? ... It is a philosopher who can distinguish between the two and make the best decision. ... Their decisions should be appropriate for the citizens of the city as a whole not simply the kings or the people. ... As if the blueprints of the city were engraved in the philosopher’s mind. ... Philosophy allows a philosopher to see things clearer than the rest of the people.
