VISUAL AND NARRATIVE CONVENTIONS OF “WESTERNS”
In this essay I shall discuss the visual and narrative conventions of the film genre of “westerns”.
Westerns are commonly set before the 20th century and are based in the mid-west, hence the name “westerns”. The main basis for plots in westerns is either, desert versus civilisation, anarchy versus law and order, freedom versus responsibility, a spiritual or physical journey or revenge.
In westerns cameras and camera angles play a major part in the story telling. ...
Revenge is a major part in westerns as this is usually what the film revolves around, whether it is about one man or a whole town. ... Like in many westerns he is the lone hero, these hero’s usually have no past and are mysterious, as well as been seen as being a “macho” type of man, much like the hard boiled cops in film noirs.
