“Tony don’t give up!” coach Diorio screamed, as the referee slapped his hand on the mat. This was Tony’s first match of his high school wrestling career. Unfortunately, he came up on the losing end. Tony got pinned in the first period. Getting pinned in the first period is one of the worst ways to get defeated in a wrestling match. Tony walked off the mat very frustrated saying to himself, “I can’t do it, and I can’t be good.” Meanwhile, Coach Diorio is telling him, “It’s all about experience Tony. You will get better.” Tony would learn that coach was right and all he needed was experience, practice, and hard work. Tony’s freshman year was a very difficult one. He wrestled in the 103 pound weight class. Tony didn’t have a lot of confidence. He began the year losing his first five matches. Coach Diorio kept telling him, “Tony, don’t give up, keep working hard and it will all come to you.” Tony just didn’t understand. But he kept working hard in practice everyday. Tony’s sixth match was against Seymour. Tony was really pumped up about this one. He was learning new moves all week in practice. Before he went on the mat coach gave him a nice little pep talk. Tony walked out onto the mat with confidence. He ended up winning the match by 5 points. This was a great win for him. The win helped him boost up his confidence. Tony started to realize that this sport is about experience. Tony worked really hard for the rest of the season. He ended up with a record of 4 wins and 13 losses. “This is not a bad record for a freshman.” Coach said. Tony didn’t believe it. He thought he was terrible. Tony wanted to quit the team. The rest of his teammates saw that Tony had the potential to be a great wrestler. His teammates convinced him to come back next year. Tony gained some weight over the summer. His sophomore year he weighed 117 pounds. This put him into the 119 pound weight class.
