Constantly Risking Absurdity: Poem Analysis
‘Constantly Risking Absurdity’ by Lawrence Ferlinghetti is interesting to analyse because it has such distinct form and diction. Before we even begin to read the poem, we can see that the structure of the verses is not uniform, and that each individual verse is strategically broken, so that the overall impression is that of instability – relating to the tightrope theme that is repeatedly brought up in this poem and discussed later on in my essay.
The poem is in free verse; it has an irregular meter and irregular words and sounds across the verses. The lines are very short and reading the poem is challenging, this relates to the theme of challenges and is similar to the feat that the poet is describing in his poem. ...
Themes in ‘Constantly Risking absurdity’ are evident; the most obvious is that of the incredible feat that the poet describes, and also the themes of perseverance, admiration and absurdity. The theme of the tightrope is an extended metaphor of how poetry is similar to walking a tightrope, and here we are trying to stay on the right verse and read the poem correctly due to its irregular structure.
