Patriarchy among the stories in our second section of authors, has dealt with aspects of man’s greed, self inflicted short-comings, and perhaps the changing of times as we know it. The stories reviewed by the class have focused on the main theme of patriarchy experienced by men. When analyzing such a subject one might ask their self, “Isnt patriarchy predicated on the subjugation and domination of women by men”? ... There is a very present theme in the systematic brutalization and marginalization of men by other men in short stories such as “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, and “Barn Burning”. When analyzing the collection of novels read in class, each and every story seemed to offer a radical reappraisal of patriarchy as a form of social organization.
This is the guiding theme of the most challenging and provocative parts of Peyton’s day on the old wooden bridge. ... This in itself is a fine example of patriarchy experienced by men.
