Intense Cold

Part 2: Canadian Landscape I). “Song of Intense Cold” by Patrick Anderson 1). The author attempts to personify winter as a means to depict a gloomy atmosphere in the poem and associate evil attributes to the cold season. For example, Anderson says, “Comes Zero himself with his needle/an icicle full of the cold cocaine/ but as tall as the glittering steeple/ that pins us down in the town.” Here, the author depicts winter as a villain (known only as Zero) whose destructive nature not only wreaks havoc but pins down the town as to prevent any means of escaping. It is described as being tall or in layman, something of a huge magnitude that is hard to overcome. He used ‘cocaine’ as a way to define the addictiveness of the season as any drug would have but is of course, very deadly. 2). The chipmunk inevitably dies as a result of being in the harsh climate for too long of a time span. Firstly, Anderson uses the villain Zero to explain the scenario in a easier fashion. He says, “I see him stride in the meadow/ and his hand a glittering wire/ he plugs in a rag of shadow,/ and throws the switch till the whistling ditch/ and the plow and the hill all sparkle.” Here, Zero is roaming the terrain in search of victims and ‘turns on a switch’ that illuminates the environment but in turn kills any creatures stalking the night. Later onwards, he says, “and a sleeper cries, and a chipmunk dies,/ his little guts turned to jewels/ in the purse of his fearing fur.” Here, Mr. Anderson uses a metaphorical device in comparing the intestines of the animal to jewels. So, the ‘jewels’, in this case, are the prizes Zero was going for and has attained. So, he is basically hunting these animals to add to his collection and by doing so, he freezes them. 3). The mood can be described as something that relates to the presence of evil and destruction. It is desolate and solemn in the sense that all living creatures will eventually be eradicated by the harsh climate. There is a sense of evil because winter is personified as an malevolent being that inflicts pain upon others which is his basic intention.
