The movie Dad, by Gary David Goldberg, is a story of hope, family, and grievance told through the lives of an elderly man named Jack Tremont and his family. The relationship between the family members in this movie could hardly be called healthy, Jack is more of a child than he is a husband, to his overbearing wife, and the relations between two generations of father and son, Jack, with his son John, and John with his son Billy, are dashed apart with neglect. In this movie, there are two traumatic experiences, one involving an unexpected disaster where Jack’s wife suffers a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital, and the anticipatory grief involved when Jack is diagnosed with a terminal illness, cancer. The grief caused by the sudden heart attack of Jack’s wife effects Jack the most out of the whole family.
