A story of two young lovers caught in the crossfire of a senseless family feud. Juliet is only fourteen and Romeo was just a few years older. Their families are bitter enemies, sworn to hatred. Yet, somehow, Romeo and Juliet fall passionately in love. Defying their parents’ wishes, they are secretly married, but their brief happiness is shattered by fate. The teenage lovers and their parents don’t seem to understand each other at all. In fact, they don’t even communicate. Juliet’s father doesn’t ask her if she wants to be married. He treats her like a piece of property, something to be bought and sold as if she were something in an auction. Romeo never asks his parents for help when he gets into trouble. He turns instead to an understanding outsider- Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence was someone he barely knew, but he actually married Romeo and Juliet. Romeo’s parents didn’t even know of the wedding. Romeo and Juliet took place in the 15th century in Verona, Italy. It was written in an old Italian that seemed to give the book a more authentic feel. The Montague’s and the Capulet’s were too good noble families. However, they have long disturbed the city’s peace with their senseless feud. The Prince of Verona warns them that next one to start a fight will be banished or put to death. At their home, the Capulet’s are preparing for a masked ball to celebrate the upcoming marriage of their 14-year-old daughter, Juliet Capulet to Count Paris. Romeo Montague crashes the Capulet party with his friend Mercutio. When he sees Juliet there, he falls desperately in love. Juliet returns his feelings. It was love at first sight and set the mood of the book with romance. The two speak of their love in the play’s famous balcony scene. Romeo spills out his heart and his love for Juliet and she bashfully accepts and returns the love. Although their parents do not know that they have even met, they planed to get married! The next morning, Friar Laurence performs the secret marriage ceremony. He hopes that the wedding will end the hatred between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s. After the wedding, Juliet returns home. Both families still unaware of what had happened. Meanwhile, Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin and rival of Romeo, has provoked a fight in the street with Mercutio. He jeers at Romeo as he leaves the church. Mercutio rushes to Romeo’s defense with a rapier, and the fight begins.
