The primary external conflict of ?A Doll House,? is the struggle of Nora to keep a secret from her husband. She has lied to her husband by truly borrowing money from Mrs. Linde, but telling Torvald she had received the money from her father. The play takes place in Nora?s home for the most part. Nora, Torvald, and Dr. Rank each express the belief that a parent is obligated to be honest and upstanding, because a parent?s sin ful actions can be passed on to his or her children like a disease. In fact, Dr. Rank does have a disease that is the result of his father?s depravity. Dr. Rank implies that his father?s sins, his many affairs with women, led him to his disease.
