Barbie’s Influences on Today’s Youth Does your dream girl have long blonde hair, blue eyes, cherry lips, and an hour glass figure? Let me introduce you to Mattel’s Barbie Doll. Barbie was created to allow young girls to have a positive, beautiful, feminine toy to admire. Mattel obviously did not take into consideration the detrimental effects Barbie could have on young girls. Everyone has an inner critic, the voice inside ones head telling one that they never look good enough. This is an important concept, simply because young girls constantly compare themselves with their Barbie doll thinking that they need to be more like her. The Barbie doll image is corrupting the self-image of young girls, harming self-esteem of young girls of different races, and displaying unrealistic values that do not coincide with the American culture of today. Barbie’s image is corrupting the self-image of young girls. Barbie is played with worldwide. Barbie has no flaws; consequently, as humans we have many. Perfect hourglass figure, handsome boyfriend, and a huge array of friends are ideal words used to describe Barbie’s life. Viewing Barbie at the adolescent age provides young girls with the false impression of what they should look like.
