Edward T Hall's view on national culture. He breaks it into (2) cultures: High and Low context. “These terms refer to the fact that when people communicate, they take for granted how much the listener knows about the subject under discussion.” In high-context communication the listener is already ‘contexted’ and so does not need to be given much background information. Where as low-context communication, the listener knows very little and must be told practically everything. Japanese, Arabs, and Mediterranean peoples, who have extensive information infrastructures among family friends, clients and who are involved in close personal relationships are high-text. Low context people include Americans and Europeans; they compartmentalize their personal relationship, their work, and many aspects of day to day life. Each time they meet with others they need detailed background information. The relevancy to organizational culture is as groups evolve over time, they face two basic challenges: integrating individuals into an effective whole, and adapting effectively to the external environment in order to survive.
