Rhythm and Robitussin My music collection has always been my own little medicine cabinet. No matter what is wrong with me, I can always count on having just the right music to make me better. If I’m feeling a little down, Led Zeppelin is my Prozac. If I’m tired and need a pick-me-up, I just take a large dose of my energy pill, Tool. If I need some help with relationships, Dashboard Confessional serves as my heart medication. On the other hand, when my relationships are going good, Barry White can be just what the doctor ordered for making everything perfect. When its late at night and I need to get to sleep, Pink Floyd works as a nice little sleeping pill, but has a mildly scary side effect; trippy dreams. The connection between drugs, both legal and illegal, and music goes deeper than the obvious assumption brought to mind by “Sex, drugs, and rock n’roll.” Listening to music is very similar to taking legal drugs, and while music and illegal drugs share some qualities, they are mainly different. Music, like medicine, can alter people’s actions, moods, and play a very big part in everyday life. Also, music and drugs can have both a negative and positive influence on people. Both drugs and music have a very strong affect on mood. When feeling down, many people reach for their favorite CD and let the music take them away. Most of the time, Led Zeppelin is my escape. I can remember many days when it seemed like nothing was going my way, and when I couldn’t take it any longer I would just make an appointment with my CD player. My music collection is my drugstore, and I can write any prescription I want. Often times, music can help heal a broken heart, make you jump up and dance, or set the mood for a romantic evening. I strongly agree with British author George Eliot’s statement, “There is no feeling, except the extremes of fear and grief, that does not find relief in music” (Music). For some people though, music just does not work. When people need a little more than music to help them feel better, medicine is the answer. Medicine has the same effect as music. Medicine can heal your headache, help your heartburn, or ease your arthritis. Some people need to use prescription drugs to keep them healthy on a daily basis.
