Education

Education The “Dick and Jane” Primer series was used in schools nationwide to help children learn to read. But the traditional “American” appearance of the books has caused much controversy many years after the disuse of the series. The perfect family portrayed in the primer consisted of two blonde-haired and blue-eyed children. Dick and Jane were perfect little kids. Their clothes were spotless, and they always had a smile on their face. Their parents were symbols of a friendly, protective authority figure. Mom always had an apron on and made them lunch and fresh cookies. Dad came home right at dinner time, always had a hug for the kids and put them to bed. Dick and Jane had two pets, a dog and a cat, both small and cute like their owners. Throughout the 50s and 60s, Dick and Jane were used to show both “ideal” family conditions and the “American” family. Some of the values that Dick and Jane taught tacitly were that life should be as simple as shown in the primers. Mom and Dad should be happy and love each other, and Mom should stay at home and cook in the kitchen and take care of the house.
