the creation

On Sunday, April 4, 2004 I attended West Chester University Choruses at Swope Hall Auditorium. The Creation, a piece by Franz Joseph Hayden, was written in Sonata-Allegro Form, in C-minor. Two chorus directors, a pianist, and a chorus consisting of many West Chester students performed the Creation. This piece began with the introduction of the chorus. One after another, they found their way into place on stage, the two directors then followed suit, as Don Briston playing the piano accompanied them. There were three movements to Hayden’s Creation. The first movement started with the narrator, David DeVenney singing in opera. I could tell this was Baroque style because it was sung in long melodic lines. The singing reminded me of recitative because of the opera and also because the plot moved forward, but the one thing that was missing was the orchestra. The first movement had many soloists. They usually followed right after the narrator.
