Johnson argues that the basis for the Unities of Time and Place arise from a false assumption. The assumption is that any dramatic representation is mistaken for reality by the viewers of a drama . In regard to the Unity of Place, while the audience watches the first act which is set in one country and the second act which is set in another, they are imagining themselves present at the time and therefore have lost touch with reality. ... In regard to the Unity of Time, the assumption is equally false. In thought, we easily contract the time of real actions and therefore it should not matter that the staged imitations of these actions are also contracted.
