Just because someone is outnumbered, doesn’t mean that they can not state and enforce their opinion. Guy Montag, a very strong-minded character, vehemently disagrees with the conformity in his society. It seems as though his eyes were opened to his new attitude because of a young, but unbiased girl named Clarisse McClellan. After meeting this peculiar girl, Guy Montag almost instantly changed the way he perceived what was around him, and made him question life. It’s almost as if she made Montag realize the emptiness in his life. The feeling given in the beginning of the novel forms the idea that Montag absolutely loves the dictatorial job he has. Using statements such as, “It was a pleasure to see things eaten” and “his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor,” it’s the feeling of achievement, and supremacy. Mentioning, also, that the smile that he has as a distinguished fireman, never fades away. Now, on his way home, he meets the inspiring Clarisse. She nonchalantly brings up the way she thought laws used to be. This makes Montag uneasy and really begins to wonder. After walking Clarisse home, she asks Montag “Are you happy?” These three words change Montag from there on out.
