... Mozart has within this music used Sonata form and quite clearly illustrates this theory. The melody theme within the work comes in to the for-front of the music a great deal, whether that is within the first statement (Section A), or throughout the remainder of the sections. Mozart involves two key elements in building the structure throughout his concerto; the first is a Ritornello structure used by a contempory to a great extent (Monteverdi), and the second is Sonata form. The Orchestral tutti opens with D minor subject, this is emphasised by syncopation within it and also dynamic contrasts. The movement is then relieved to an extent by the interaction of the second subject, which modulates in to F major. The solo piano then makes its entry with a new theme in D minor, a theme that is referred to continually throughout the movement. This then leads to a cadenza, which Mozart left unwritten. ... The first movement of Mozart’s piano concerto in D Minor can be analysed by the structure ABACA. ... The B section constitutes a more rhythmical feel, having a “pattern of regular four-bar phrases”, which involve a higher tessitura in the piano part while the strings underlay the solo piano with a “discreet accompaniment”. ... The section flows into an A-minor interlude as well as a dramatic C major and G-minor, which has a very unsettling effect upon the listener although it moves the listener to understand the structure of the sonata form, used within the movement. The C section contains a codetta and a re-transition, in which the movement settles to a greater extent than the previous movements. I feel that this section is used by Mozart mainly as a fill in section to control the listener to build up excitement for the return of the A section.
