Miss Emily was out of touch with reality to the point of insanity. Throughout this short story Miss Emily constantly amazes the town she lives in with inexplicable behavior. Throughout her life Miss Emily seemed to show signs of not living a reality but it is not until the end that she truly proves that she was indeed insane. Miss Emily had allowed her home to become decayed, which explains that the upkeep of her home was not good, and she failed to keep up with the changing times. Colonel Sartoris was the former mayor of this town, who at the time of Miss Emily’s father’s death felt as though he needed to look after Miss Emily, stated to her that she would never again have to pay taxes.
