The existing GSM protocol does not have a mutual authentication between the VLR and MS. ... They propose that the GSM protocol be changed to include mutual communication between the MS and the VLR.
Considering the number of mobile stations that are registered globally and that the next generation mobile network is on our doorstep, they do not suggest that we change the existing GSM protocol but extend it.
