The spectacles were chosen as they are a very interesting object, millions of people rely on them to see clearly through their every day lives and they are also seen as an important fashion accessory. This essay will examine the spectacles by describing them both aesthetically and culturally, looking at the history of spectacles, how their functions have changed over time, how they are marketed and perceived and how successful this particular artefact is. ... The first spectacles were invented between 1268 and 1289, this is known from two quotes of the time. ... Then in 1289 di Popozo wrote, “I am so debilitated by age that without the glasses known as spectacles, I would no longer be able to read or write. ...
The first spectacles had lenses made of quartz which were set into bone, metal or leather mountings. ... Fig 2 shows a reproduction pair of spectacles copied from a pair that dates to the mid 1400s. It took almost 400 years for the problem of how to keep spectacles from falling off to be solved.
