Carson is soliciting a bribe as: • It will have an impact on his judgement for the selection of clothes range • It has a tone of reciprocity (bribe), rather than discount • It was kept secret in the past, and if followed will most likely will be kept that way • Is being asked by Carson, because of his position as buyer As per Utilitarian theory ‘an action or practice is right if it leads to the best possible balance of good consequences over bad consequences for all the parties affected’. Based on this criterion Cassady should not agree to Carson’s suggestion. Because even though it might bring about better / desired result in for Cassady and Petite, but it will have bad consequences for all their competitors. Further, even Carson’s company stands to have negative impact, because if they were to openly ask for a discount they might get better offers from competition.
