... The gospels of Matthew and Mark both tell of Jesus’ life and then many events that took place in it, yet Jesus’ portrayal differs in the two gospels. Both how Jesus interacts with the disciples and the way Jesus explains his use of parables are written about in the gospels, but with significantly different meanings.
In both gospels, Jesus’ disciples ask him about his use of parables-namely why he uses parables. In Mark, he responds by saying:
“’To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God,
but for those outside everything is in parables; so that they
may indeed see but not perceive, and may hear but not
understand; lest they should turn again, and be forgiven. ...
In Matthew, Jesus responds to the disciples’ questioning of the parables by saying:
“’ This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing
they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they
understand. ... 13-15)
With this, similar to in Mark, Jesus is saying that those who are not disciples are will be confused by the parables, and will not understand them.
