Critical Essay Adam Walker The novel I have chosen is John Steinbecks “Of Mice And Men” I have chosen this because its themes and characters are vital and its structure is simple yet complex. The main theme is Friendship because it is all about two friends trying to get a better life and a farm of their own and not have to travel around the country looking for work at ranches. Another important theme is disability , mental and physically as was the way in which woman were treated and the other important issue was work because the two friends needed to get money so they were always working somewhere. There are two main characters in this novel and the first of them is George Milton he is small, smart and bossy and he looks after the other main character who is Lennie Small and tries to stop him doing ‘bad things’. “Small, quick and dark of face with restless eyes and strong, sharp features” Lennie Small is a huge man who is extremely strong but is also mentally disabled so he does things that he doesn't mean to do and forgets alot of people and things that he has met and seen. “A huge man, shapeless of face with large pale eyes, with large sloping shoulders” “I tried not to forget honest to God I did” George and Lennie are the only main characters and the novel revolves around and centres on them. The supporting characters include Crooks he is discriminated against and made stay in a different building from all of the white people because he is black.
