Role of the Citizen in a Democracy
The Role of the Citizen in a Democracy I want to begin by asking the question “what is a democracy?” According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary a democracy is “a government by the people; rule of the majority, a government by which the supreme power is help by the people, and a political unit that has a democratic government.” People have the right to control their own destiny in a democracy. Now, since we have examined the definition of a democracy you can perceptibly see that the power rests within the people. I believe that a democracy, to an extent, can be indefinable. A democracy doesn’t exist everywhere that it is believed or thought to exist. There are always standards to how far a citizen can go to stand for something they believe in, before they are knocked back into their place and status. A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. ... ” These rights are what gives the citizen the opportunity to live their own life with their own beliefs and value.
