Film is considered one of the “mass media” associated with “mass communication”. The goal of “mass communication” is to use one or more of the mass media to communicate with a “mass audience”. When dealing with any aspect of the communication process one must consider the role of the transmitter, the receiver, and medium of communication that are employed. In this particular instance the medium of communication is film, the transmitter is a filmmaker, and the motion picture viewers comprise the category of “receiver”. If the filmmaker is to communicate with this mass audience she or he must know how to transmit messages using the medium of film. ... The better the transmitter and receiver understand how the medium they are using affects the content and “fidelity” of the message, the better the quality of the communication. ... The film critic is particularly interested in how the motion picture functions as a medium of communication, and with assessing the content, quality, and fidelity of the messages conveyed. ...



Every medium of communication has certain properties that can be used by the communicator to convey messages. The communicators choice of medium will partially determine the form that communication will take. For example, the overall type of expression that can be communicated through sculpture is substantially different from that found in music, theater, dance, writing, radio, or film. ... Theater, dance, and film, like sculpture, can convey information based on posed figures. The use of posed figures is something that non-visual media like music, writing, and radio can not employ in their communication. While sculpture, film, theater, and dance can incorporate posed figures in their individual types of expression, there are differences in the way these media are able to utilize the human body. One variation is that sculpture is a three-dimensional art form while a film image is two-dimensional. ...

The principal responsibility of the producer is to see that the idea ends up as a completed film for the viewer to see. Sometimes the producer is also the film technician who shoots, edits, and exhibits the finished motion picture. ... As anyone knows who has ever read the credits after viewing a Hollywood motion picture, film is a collaborative product involving numerous technicians of varied expertise. Since even a modest commercial film is very expensive, outside backers will be hesitant to provide the necessary financing unless they have a good sense of what the film is about and feel that they have a fair chance at getting some return on their investment. ... A “one-liner” tries to capture the essence of an entire film in a short phrase or sentence. ...



A film "treatment" is a rough outline or summary of the narrative of the proposed movie that usually is no more than a paragraph or a couple of pages in length. Like the one-liner, the treatment contains the bare essence of the proposed film narrative and is designed to quickly educate backers who do not want to take the time to read a detailed account of a given project. ...



A script contains all the verbal and visual information that the scriptwriter envisions will appear on the screen in the finished film. ...


The final shooting script is meant to contain all the shots and dialogue in the film, and describes much of the action and camera setups. This does not mean that different approaches in the filming won’t arise during production. ...
