Siegfried was born in Weirligh, Kent, England on September 8, 1886 into a leisurely society of country living. Like many of his contemporaries life changed drastically for him and hard times were upon his family. Early in the Great War Sassoon's brother Hamo was mortally wounded at Gallipolis and sadly died. Hamo's death fuelled Sasson's desire for vengence. He invloved himself in courageuous and sometimes suicidal deeds against the Germans. To this end he went out on patrol in no man's land even when there were nor raids planned. Such reckless enthusiasm earned him the tittle " Mad Jack." Sassoon had received military suspensionof four weeks from duty- reason unknown. When he returned to the front a month later his anger and thirst for vengence had abated.
