MURDEROUS LINK TO AMBITION: Laura McErvale 11F
A comparative essay: Macbeth and Caroline Reed Robertson.
Macbeth’s murderous plight is willed on by his desire to achieve and fulfill the prophecy of the three weird sisters. It is this ambition which ultimately leads Macbeth to succeed in becoming King, leaving a path of destruction in his wake. Similarly, Caroline Reed Robertson had a desire for a more prosperous life in which she also achieved through murder. Robertson became utterly obsessed with teenager Rachel Barber and went to extremities to take on her identity. From adopting Barber’s mother’s maiden name to the eventual murder, it was the penetrating and harrowing ambitious nature of Robertson which led to the ultimate act of desperation, as it did Macbeth.
Although the murder of King Duncan and Rachel Barber are five centuries apart, it demonstrates that the murderous link to ambition has not faltered. ... Robertson was previously a babysitter for Barber and became consumed with jealousy as Barber’s talents in the field of dance and her popularity amongst her peers grew. Both Macbeth and Robertson admired their victims greatly.
