Miniver Cheevy
... Among the best of the poems written in this period is Miniver Cheevy. Miniver Cheevy is a short dramatic poem regarding a man born after his time, or at least a man who thinks so. Miniver falls victim of over romanticizing the past when all he really wants is to escape the present. Miniver is a frustrated romantic, born in the wrong time for romance. He is close enough to being Robinson himself that Robinson could gaze deep inside a mirror and see Miniver right there staring back at him. Like Miniver, Robinson too "dreamed of Camelot"--and wrote three very long, and very tedious poems in which the "dreaming” is obsessive and unrecognized. But in "Miniver Cheevv" the dreaming is compulsive only for Miniver. The connection between Miniver and Robinson comes through in his third volume of these poems, “Captain Craig. ... Miniver is the only one who shares these characteristics. ... " A good deal of the time he was almost as convinced as Miniver that he had been "born too late.
