In our society today, the labor unions have taken on a new role compared to the past. Labor unions were developed to help protect workers from unsafe working conditions, unfair wages, and poor benefits. The International Brotherhood of the Teamsters is no different. In the past few years, the Teamsters have been battling the allowing of crossing of American borders by Mexican truck drivers. ... The Teamsters still are a strong force in protecting the jobs of those that are treated unfairly. In the case of Darigold workers being threatened with termination for supporting a legal strike by a local Teamsters Union. They also get involved in not only truckers, but have diversified into other areas such as ambulance personnel
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters was founded to represent those truck drivers who we being treated unfairly by their employer. (Teamsters Press Release, 2004) Today the Teamsters represent not only the trucking industry but many other types of employment as well. I was personally involved in getting the ambulance service I used to work for in a local Teamsters union. ... When we called the Teamsters with interest in joining, they came right to our aid. The CEO of the company shut down the service when word of the forming of a union was announced. ... The Teamsters Union sent a legal team to our side and won a big case for the employees.
