Quinceaneras and Their Importance

Quinceañeras are one of Mexico’s most important traditions that is celebrated throughout Latin America, as well as parts of the United States and the rest of the world. The term quinceañera refers to both the female completing her fifteen years of life and the party to celebrate it. The word has been around forever, but it is not always completely clear just what it really is. There is a deeper meaning to this tradition and I plan to explain it to my fullest. The word “quinceañera” means Sweet Fifteen, and is many times said to be a Mexican form of the American Sweet Sixteen. This is not completely true because the quinceañera’s purpose is to celebrate a Hispanic female of Catholic faith’s coming of age, as well as her entrance to adulthood. Along with this is the taking on of responsibilities, and being accepted as a woman by her family and her friends. The origins of the Quinceañera celebrations remain a mystery, although the roots may well lie in the area of the Aztecs. These days, Quinceañeras are celebrated as elaborate as some weddings. Gowns and rented formal wear, limousines, photo sessions, catered dinners, dance parties and beautiful decorations mark the occasion as a special day that occurs once in a girls life. Although some members of the Latino community feel that Quinceañeras have become to extravagant, and a financial strain on families, the tradition is valued by many and continues as a vital part of their culture. There are many parts of this party and takes months to plan. There are also key people in this celebration. The main people of course are the quinceañera’s parents. They are the ones in charge of organizing the whole thing. They have the biggest responsibilities in planning a magnificent party. Next, come the padrinos, also known as the godparents or sponsors.. These are close friends of the family or family members that donate money to fund the party, as well as buy the main gifts.
